Big Hole River 468 cfs Beaverhead River 815 cfs
When we launched the boat this morning the river had a very different look about it. It was much higher than the day before and it was a bit murky. It came up 150 cfs from yesterday and it was welcome. I was afraid these conditions would put the fish off but it didn’t. It wasn’t the greatest day with dry fly’s but it was ok and there was enough action to stay on top.
I have heard rumors from Bozeman and other places that the Big Hole is just about dried up and not worth fishing. Top water action in the morning is about as good as any river in the state and with the tricos and spruce moths just around the corner it’s getting better. Chuck Robbins who is author of Montana Fly Fishing and a guide from the Dillon area said the Beaverhead is fishing very well. He also told me it wasn’t exactly my favorite form of fishing and I knew immediately what he meant. Two #20 nymphs with lots of lead and the fishing is awesome. Lots of fish between 16 and 20 inches.
I’m still waiting for a fishing report from Andros Island. Herman or Brian should be getting in touch with me in the next couple days.
