We are back in the country, and got out on the Big Hole today. Read on for a quick update on river conditions! It was about 55 degrees, and warmed up to around 60 when we took off the river this evening.
Flows at Maiden Rock 1170 cfs, and slowly dropping.
Water clarity below Jerry Creek is about 12" - 14"
We stayed dedicated to throwing streamers, but did see a few fish rising, likely on midges or BWO's. We were able to get a good handful of trout to chase the streamer out of slow moving riffles in the early afternoon. As the day progressed, we found them in slow water, coming right off the bank. A slow strip was key, and keeping it down (barely visible).
Effective patterns include: Barely Legal (Olive/white), Kreelex (copper/gold), Mini Dungeon (white/cream). Olive has been quite consistent for folks, so that would be a good place to start.
Overall, the fish look healthy, happy and moderately hungry for mid-April! Hope that helps your future Big Hole travels! We are looking forward to kicking off our guide season this week. Craig is planning a SW MT river tour, so be sure to check back for up-to-date reports. Thanks to all that have reached out with kind words in regards to our 2025 plans at the fly shop. Cheers & Tight Lines.
